Training to Become a USAF Special Warfare Operator: CCT, PJ, SR, or TACP

When you step into the world of U.S. Air Force Special Warfare, you’re choosing one of the most physically and mentally demanding pipelines in the military. Whether your goal is to become a Combat Controller (CCT), Pararescueman (PJ), Special Reconnaissance (SR) operator, or Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) specialist, the preparation requires discipline, resilience, and a program designed to meet the exact demands of your chosen career field.

At 18A Fitness, you don’t just get a workout plan—you get first-hand expertise from Kevin Edgerton, former Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the USAF Special Warfare Training Wing. Kevin built, designed, and implemented training protocols that enhanced the selection rate of every Air Force Assessment and Selection Course (AFAC). The same science-driven, battle-tested systems are now available to you.

Understanding the AFACs: Four Paths, One Mission

Each AFAC has its own unique role, but all require an elite blend of physical conditioning, tactical skill, and mental toughness.

Combat Controller (CCT)

CCTs are the Air Force’s air-to-ground integration specialists. They insert with ground forces and provide terminal attack control for airstrikes, air traffic control in austere environments, and communication support.

  • Pipeline Highlights: Combat Diver, Air Traffic Control School, Freefall, SERE.

  • Physical Demands: Strong in swimming, long rucks, sprint endurance, and upper body pulling strength.

Pararescue (PJ)

Known as the “Guardian Angel” of Special Warfare, PJs specialize in personnel recovery—rescuing and medically treating downed pilots or wounded operators behind enemy lines.

  • Pipeline Highlights: EMT-Paramedic, Combat Diver, Freefall, extensive medical training.

  • Physical Demands: High-level swim capacity, anaerobic recovery, muscular endurance, and strong work capacity under load.

Special Reconnaissance (SR)

The newest Special Warfare AFSC, SRs provide environmental reconnaissance, surveillance, and electronic warfare support. They’re a hybrid between traditional reconnaissance and cyber-electronic warfare.

  • Pipeline Highlights: Reconnaissance, combat diving, freefall, advanced surveillance training.

  • Physical Demands: Strong endurance base, rucking proficiency, swimming, and tactical mobility under unpredictable conditions.

Tactical Air Control Party (TACP)

TACPs serve as the link between air and ground forces, calling in close air support and coordinating airstrikes directly with Army or SOF units.

  • Pipeline Highlights: JTAC Qualification, Army Airborne, Survival School.

  • Physical Demands: Load carriage, sprint-endurance, rucking, and high anaerobic tolerance for sustained field operations.

Physical Preparation for Each AFAC

While all Special Warfare candidates need a robust foundation of strength, endurance, mobility, and resilience, preparation must be tailored to the unique demands of each AFSC.

  • CCT: Prioritize swim intervals, underwater confidence, and upper-body strength endurance. Add frequent sprints and long-duration rucks.

  • PJ: Build a foundation around work capacity circuits, pool training, and high-rep strength endurance, with mobility drills to sustain long-term training volume.

  • SR: Train for versatility—balance running, rucking, and swimming with functional strength patterns that support reconnaissance and long-duration field operations.

  • TACP: Focus on load-bearing strength, anaerobic threshold conditioning, and sprint endurance. Weighted carries, sled pushes, and interval runs are essentials.
