Transforming Lives through Fitness and Training: Achieving the Impossible

When I began @18a_fitness, my goal was clear: help people reach goals they never thought possible. Over the years, I have had the privilege of coaching a wide range of individuals—from those earning elite military qualifications like the Green Beret, Ranger Tab, or Trident, to everyday people simply wanting to get healthier, lose weight, and move better. Every success story matters deeply to me.

This post explores how fitness and training can transform lives, drawing from decades of experience in Special Forces and strength coaching. Whether you are preparing for military selection courses, law enforcement academies, or aiming to improve your quality of life as an athlete over 40, this journey is about more than physical training. It is about pushing past limits and achieving what once seemed impossible.

The Power of Purpose in Training

Training with a clear purpose changes everything. When people come to me, they often have a goal that feels daunting—passing SFAS, SWAS, RASP, BUD/S, or excelling in a law enforcement academy. Others want to regain vitality and improve their health after years of neglect.

Purpose fuels motivation. It turns workouts from chores into meaningful steps toward a larger mission. For example, one client preparing for Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) told me that every early morning run reminded him why he started: to serve his country and prove to himself he could do it. That mindset helped him push through moments of exhaustion and doubt.

Building Physical Foundations for Success

Achieving tough goals requires a strong physical foundation. This means developing:

  • Strength to handle demanding tasks like rucking with heavy loads or climbing obstacles.

  • Endurance to sustain effort over long periods without fatigue.

  • Mobility to move efficiently and avoid injury.

  • Mental toughness to stay focused and resilient under pressure.

In my 26 years in Special Forces and 7.5 years as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the USAF Special Warfare Human Performance Squadron, I learned that training must be balanced. It’s not just about lifting heavier or running faster. It’s about preparing the body to perform under real-world conditions.

For example, I worked with a candidate who struggled with mobility early on. We focused on improving hip and ankle flexibility alongside strength training. This adjustment helped him pass the physical tests and reduced his injury risk during selection.

Coaching Beyond Sets and Reps

Coaching is more than programming workouts. It’s about understanding each person’s unique challenges and goals. I take pride in being part of journeys that transform lives, whether the goal is elite military qualification or simply becoming healthier.

This means:

  • Listening carefully to what clients want and need.

  • Adjusting plans based on progress and setbacks.

  • Encouraging mental resilience and confidence.

  • Celebrating every milestone, big or small.

One woman training for a law enforcement academy shared how the mental coaching helped her overcome self-doubt. She said, “I never thought I could do pull-ups, but your support made me believe I could.” She passed her academy tests with flying colors.

Success Stories That Inspire

Over the years, I have seen many incredible transformations. Some clients earned their Green Beret, Ranger Tab, or Trident. Others lost significant weight, improved mobility, or simply gained confidence to live better lives.

Each story is a reminder that fitness is a tool for change. It can open doors to new opportunities and help people become their best selves.

For example, a 45-year-old athlete came to me wanting to improve his quality of life. Through tailored strength and conditioning, he increased his energy, reduced chronic pain, and completed a marathon he never thought possible.

The Mission Continues

The mission of @18a_fitness remains the same: help people accomplish what once seemed out of reach. Whether you are preparing for a military school, law enforcement academy, or simply want to improve your health and fitness, know that every step forward counts.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their training over the years. Your success is the best part of what I do.
